Thailand January 2012

I spent a day fly fishing with Jean- Francois Helias (Francois for short) of Angling Thailand on the 25th of January this year. I was referred to Francois from an angler friend Steve, who I had met in the Mossburn campground on the South Island of NZ about 2 years ago who now works in Hong Kong. It really is a small world isn't it.
Francois a great guy to hang around with (speaks fluent French, English and Thai) is a superb angler and knows so much about fish, but then again, what would you expect from a man that holds 238 IGFA world records!!!

I was picked up at the Hotel early the was driven over to pick up some other guests. On the way we stopped to pick up one of Francois's guides, he owns a shop. This photo below shows Francois looking at some of the lures that his guide sells in his shop.

There was more gear for sale on the other wall. The picture of the large fish on the wall is a world record Siamese Carp.

We had a 2 hour drive through the lovely Bangkok early morning traffic to reach our destination.

This photo was taken well and truly out of town - hence the lack of cars on the road!

Nearly there.

We fished a large dam. I had a great day, despite all the heat, caught over 20 Barra and lost a fair few (I could put that down to user error or crimped barbs... so I guess it must have been due to crimped barbs) :-)

Here are a couple of snaps, biggest fish went 6.2kg or 13.5lbs.

They seemed to like red and black DNA Bush pigs in a 2/0!

It wasnt exactly wilderness fishing, case in point is that we went and had a sit down Thai meal for lunch, but it was good fun!

As I mentioned above, it wasnt wilderness fishing, but given I only had one day to spare in Bangkok it was a fun way to spend a day. I would do it again!
